Each Month we're going to work to bring you a quick Q&A with each of the Pro-Team athletes. We figured why not start with the newest member: Kiaran McCormack. Kiaran's first Obstacle Course race was the Spartan Sprint in Amesbury Massachusetts in 2013, since then he's been working hard to climb the ranks of the OCR world.
Kiaran, Why do OCR Professionally? why not just keep it recreational?
Every young athlete dreams of being a professional. I had a small experience of this playing soccer in Ireland. Although it was a while ago that dream never died. I found OCR and realized that it was something I enjoyed and wasn't too bad at. Anyone can sit on the coach, eat chips and complain about life, in my opinion it's the reason why the world is overweight undernourished and chronically ill. I want to be the best I can, and look back with no regrets. For this reason professional OCR was the obvious progression for me from doing something that is fun, to something I want to give my all to. Tell us about your style of training for OCRs..
I train 6 days a week. Recently I started periodizing my WODs based on heart rate/durartion intensity. I do 2 hard, 2 medium, and 2 light WODs a week, with 1 day off. I train using a mix of med - long runs (on trails if the weather allows) hill work and speed intervals. I strength train, and do what I call OCR WODs which involve circuits of running and body weight exercises. What made you interested in applying to and joining Nor'Easter Pro-Team?
I went to college at University Maine Orono (UMO) with Pro Team member Miles Bartlett. Although, we didn't really know each other. We started talking at races due to our UMO connection. I was looking for an opportunity to join a Pro Team to help push me to the next level of competitiveness, and make some OCR connections. Nor'easters goals aligned with mine, and I was pumped when they offered me a spot on their Pro Team for the 2015 season.
